First Carving, a Nicolai Fechin Inspired Piece February 23, 2009

Filed under: Carving — jzmurphree @ 8:46 pm

Back in January I started a carving class at UNM-Taos. This is my first piece, a Nicolai Fechin inspired design. I got the idea from a door panel he carved, as documented in the book ‘Fechin: The Builder”. Fechin was a Russian born artist who moved to Taos in the 1930’s. Primarily known for his paintings, Fechin was a pretty talented designer, builder, and carver.

Your grandmother shared your site with me yesterday when I was at her house. I am Don’s nephew and briefly met you at his funeral. Needless to say this door is quite impressive as well as furniture and cabinets shown. From another direction I make beds, swinging beds and other furniture items from architectural pieces. Many are used in lake houses/porches.

Hope to catch up with again some day when you are visiting in Alabama. Good luck on furniture. I know the family Thanksgiving will be great…food was already being prepared and going in the freezer when we were at your grandmother’s.
